Eliza Skelton 1820
From Hands Across The Sea Samplers, with a young boy, dressed as a Cavalier and riding a rocking horse, it is a lovely heirloom sampler to stitch for a child. Eliza was born on 18 May, 1807 in the village of Heslington close to the city of York in Northern England. She was christened the next day. Her Father was the village School Master and the Parish clerk. At the age of 12 Eliza recorded that her sampler was “wrought with the help of her mother at Heslington School” so we can presume that her mother taught the young girls needlework. Shown stitched on 40ct Autumn Gold from Lakeside Linens using Au Ver à Soie d’Alger silks with a stitch count of 281 x 281. Stitches used are cross stitch over 1 and 2 threads

Helen Kedslie 1815
From Hands Across The Sea Samplers, an impressive and exquisitely stitched example of samplers worked in Scotland during this period. The sampler’s colourful, trailing rose vine border contains several motifs associated with Scottish school girl samplers. The large building featured is found on many Scottish samplers and it is possible that it is the School. Shown stitched on 40ct Sand Dune from Lakeside Linens using Au Ver à Soie d’Alger silks; stitch count is 326w x 491h. A variety of stitchs are used (including cross stitch over 1 and 2 threads, satin stitch, a handful of queen stitches, rice stitch, stem stitch, back stitch, double running stitch and bullion stitch)
