I will warn you right now .. THIS will be a LONG one! That should cover the 'small print' as well, so from this point on, I cannot be held responsible for anyone running out of paper or ink!
What a month this has been! Superbowl Weekend Sale, then going to Nashville Market, then coming back and spending 4 nights and 3 days doing nothing but pricing and entering the NEW STUFFS so I could have them appear 'magically' on my What's New page for my Market Saturday Event! There is nothing quite like still adding, typing away and activating catalog items at 1:30am on Saturday and being able to e-mail back and forth with two of my employees (Debbie & Kathy) who are doing the same thing as I am! I came home exhausted Saturday night, went to bed just after 9pm and did not wake up, not even once, until after 9:30AM on Sunday!!!
I find myself wondering if I need to rethink my whole "Market Saturday Event" thing. I am first and foremost, a real live cross stitch shop. I am second, a cross stitch shop with a web site and shopping cart. When I add to my catalog for this Event, I have to scan the item, type in the info and add it to the system, add the image, and then go back in and Edit that item, to make it Inactive so no one can see it yet. Then, late on Friday night, I have to go back into my system, and Edit each item individually (again), this time to make it LIVE on my catalog! That way, no one - not even the Internet stitching community - can see what I've bought until my Market Saturday Event. That's the only way that has been "fair" to everyone. And I do this from the shop as well as at home (on slow dial up) .. and so does Debbie (who worked 62 1/2 hours that week!).
IF I put all of my new items from Market immediately up on my catalog, that means that my 'walk in customers' would not have the same opportunity to see everything NEW at the same time as my Internet customers. And in some cases, my walk in customers will not have the same chance to get the Limited Edition items that are offered. (Since it takes us several days to get everything added to our records, our cash register, our web site and then out on our shelves, someone coming into the shop would have to spend the entire day there, 3-4 days in a row, just to see it as it's put out.) And since other shops hold their Market Events upon their return to debut the 'new' to their customers, I don't even do a "Market Report" from Nashville, as that would not be fair to the other shop owners and their events.
Unfortunately, there are web sites (the Internet-only discounter 'shops', some designers and some distributors) that immediately - in some instances the same day as market begins, if not before - put out there what is being introduced to those of us to attend the show. And then, there are designers who ship their automatics to the shops just prior to Market so that those shops put their images up on their catalogs while we're on the road getting there. So, by the time the shops that attend Nashville get home, it would seem the majority of you already know what we've bought. (I have to state here for the record - I am not talking about the viable Internet-Only Shops who co-exist with the brick and mortar shops that are out there. I'm speaking of those who discount every item/every day, those who do not have expenses that the 'real' shops have. And for the few of you who have asked lately- no, I will NOT match their prices. Don't ask me! I have taxes, inventory, employees, utilities, rent, a bank loan, insurance and various other operating expenses .. and I would like to stay in business!)
I'm not complaining about Market Saturday and all the work I do ... I honestly LOVE doing that (I'm crazed, I know!). But it each year it gets harder and harder to work that hard shopping and then doing the in-store adding and pricing stuffs as well as the computer end of it (it can't be that I'm getting older, can it?), just to see that those shops who did not attend the Market (as well as those on-line Internet-shop discounters) already have everything NEW up on their catalogs in advance of my actually returning to the shop. There just seems to be something so wrong when those of us shops who support the designers and the markets by actually spending the time away from our business, by actually spending all that money traveling back and forth, seem to be 'last kids on the block' when it comes to showing what was new.
Anyway ... I love going to Market! I love seeing everything in person! I love seeing my friends (shop owners and designers) and being able to spend some time with them! I love trying to find the unique and fun for my customers! I love the craziness of holding an After-Market Event. It's just I just have to think about "IF" I should continue trying to be fair to everyone and do my Market Events that way I have been (unless I come across that "time in a bottle" and "fountain of youth" I've been hearing about, that is!). Actually, Nashville is seeming like it was so long ago and now, Camp Stitchalot is this next weekend and then I have to start getting ready to attend the Summer Market in Columbus in June!!!

The delay we are experinencing on the SWAN FLOOR STANDS from HKS Enterprises is due to a supply problem. - 9am - 2pm - A SPECIALTY STITCHES NOTE BOOK with Ruth Sparrow Gendron of TWISTED THREADS -- Ruth will be teaching you a variety of stitches, including drawn thread work and cutwork, on a large count fabric (to aid your eyes and stitching abilities). You will receive a notebook with well-diagramed stitch guides in sleeves, linen for each stitch, needles and fibers. The stitches to be taught are: Basic Hemstitch, Hemstitch with Herringbone, Italian Hemstitch, Interlacing Cutwork with Beads, Pulled Work, Double Leviathan, Rice Stitch & Rhodes Stitch. Class Price includes Lunch: $65.00
- 9am - 2pm - FINISHING TECHNIQUES 101 with Charlotte Dudney of FROM THE PEP'R POT -- Bring a finished punchneedle project (or small cross stitch project) and learn the different ways to finish it. You'll begin with "Blocking" your design, then learn the different techniques such as: "Whip-stitched" edge, Appliqué, gift boxes, ornaments, framing with a pre-set opening, wool frames, and more. All finishing ideas are conservation quality finishing ... no glue. Receive a document detailing the finishing ideas with color pictures, samples of the types of material recommended, wooden legs, dowels, interfacing, pellon fleece, finishing thread, embroidery needles, etc, ... all organized in a sewing bag. - 2pm - 4pm - A MODERN HEIRLOOM with Deb Koch of Stitches N Things
-- Turn a traditional band sampler into a modern-day heirloom with this project taught on 25ct Lugana using floss, perle cotton and silk. Funky shaped and wildly colored buttons from Just Another Button Company make this design NOT your grandmother's needlework! You'll be learning 9 different specialty stitches and will be able to finish this "in class" into a wearable Pin, Necklace OR even a magnet or sit it on a counter using a Rectangle Tin Pin (optional tin pin easel available). - 2pm - 5pm - AUTUMN PUMPKIN HOUSE or ... HOW TO STITCH OVER ONE "The Right Way" with Ruth Sparrow Gendron of TWISTED THREADS --
Ruth will be introducing you to 'stitching over one thread" with this cute design that also employs several specialty stitches. This class will provide extensive direction for stitching over one linen thread, as well as the following stitches: 4-Sided, Smyrna, Long Arm Cross, Checker Stitch & Colonial Knots. Your kit will include: 32ct Dirty Linen, Sampler Threads. Chart with 4 color picture, needle, and stitch diagrams. If you've been wanting to learn the CORRECT WAY to stitch one over one, you'll want to take this class! Ruth has taught her version of this technique in the past and this has been a tremendously well received class! Class Price: $55.00
- 2pm - 5pm - RUSSIAN PUNCH NEEDLE (needlepunch) with Charlotte Dudney of FROM THE PEP'R POT -- Charlotte is recognized as 'the' expert in this field and is primarily responsible for bringing this needleart form to our industry! This technique resembles primitive rug-hooking in miniature; has endless possibilities and is fun with quick results - complete a needle project in days instead of weeks or months.
You will receive a PIN project with Weeks Dye Works Floss AND an exclusive pattern that has been created Just For Us (as based on my shop logo) by Charlotte!! Teaching needles will be provided for your use during the class. If you already have a needle (of any kind), bring that needle to class, and Charlotte will teach you how to use that type needle. - 7:30pm - 9:30pm - HOW TO FRAME with Ruth Sparrow Gendron of TWISTED THREADS -- Learn how to properly frame your needlework project with Ruth by using the Pinning method of mounting your needlework. This is a demonstration class. She will be demonstrating how to mount a piece of needlework on foam core with batting using the pin method. Learn to center your piece, basting for precise fit, measuring and cutting foam core mounting board. Class Price: $20.00

And on top of all the crazed getting to and from Nashville, in getting everything ready for Market Saturday Event, I find out that Charlotte Dudney's (From The Pep'r Pot) father just passed away. And today I get a call from Alan, Ruth Sparrow Gendron's husband (Twisted Threads), that when Ruth became sick the last day of Market, she had a terrible case of the flu - which put her into the hospital as it went into pneumonia. I wonder if the 'powers that be' are trying to tell me something about Camp this year?? Both are my scheduled designer/instructors, as Betsy Stinner was to be. With that ..... please remember to keep Betsy of Earth Threads in your thoughts and prayers - she needs all the good karma she can get!!!
